Why was Surah Kausar revealed? 

Allah reveals Surah Al Kausar to console Prophet Muhammad (SAW) following the death of His son. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) had four daughters and three sons from his first marriage, but none of them lived.

The Arabs discouraged the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) by stating that he would be left affiliated and naming him “Abtar,” which means to cut off. They were insulting Prophet Muhammad (SAW), but Allah the Great answered His petitions and brought good news by unveiling Surah Kausar of the Canal of the Kausar.

Surah Al Kawthar Transliteration

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Bismillah hir rahman nir raheem

In the name of Allah, the most Compassionate, the Merciful.  

 إِنَّآ أَعْطَيْنَٰكَ ٱلْكَوْثَرَ

Innaaa a’tainaa kal kauthar

Indeed, We have granted you, [O Muhammad], al-Kausar.

فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَٱنْحَرْ

Fasalli li rabbika wanhar

So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone].

إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ ٱلْأَبْتَرُ

Inna shaani’aka huwal abtar

Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off.

Hazrat Anas said that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said,

“I entered Paradise and came to a river whose banks had tents made of pearls. So, I thrust my hand into its flowing water and found that it was musk’s most potent (smell). 

So, I asked, “O Jibril! What is this” 

He replied, “This is Al-Kausar which Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has given you.”.

Allah Almighty gifted Prophet Muhammad (SAW) with Al-Kausar, the river in Paradise. Anas ibn Malik narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was asked about Al-Kawthar, and he said, 

“Verily, it (Al-Kauthar) is a river that my Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, has promised me and has abundant goodness. It is a pond where my Ummah (followers) will be brought to on the Day of Judgment. Its containers are as numerous as the stars in the sky.” [Narrated by Muslim]

  • Be grateful to Allah. 

In the second verse, Allah Almighty asked His Prophet always to be grateful to Allah for everything. 

فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَٱنْحَرْ

So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone].

In this verse, prayer and sacrifice have been mentioned, mainly because they are two of the best acts of worship and means of drawing close to Allah. 

Prayer and sacrifice have to be offered solely for Allah. Offering them to others besides Allah puts a person beyond the pale of Islam.

In the last and third verse, Allah Almighty console Prophet Muhammad (SAW) by stating, 

إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ ٱلْأَبْتَرُ

Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off.

Allah warns those who oppose Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and the message he conveys in the preceding verse. Such people would be shut off from everything nice in this world and after death.
